Court Rules - Northwest Territories
Last revised September 12, 2022

Prior to 1996, the NWT Courts used the Rules of the Supreme Court of Alberta (Judicature Act, R.S.N.W.T. 1988, c.J-1, s.60).

This section was repealed and replaced in 1995 by the Act to Amend the Judicature Act, No. 2 (S.N.W.T 1995, c.6, s.4 - in force April 1, 1996), replacing the Rules of the Supreme Court of Alberta with the Rules of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories.

The Northwest Territories Gazette, Part II (available in the Vancouver Courthouse Library and from 2006 to present online), contains regulations, order and rules of court.

The Northwest Territories government web page provides a listing of rules made by Supreme Court, Territorial Court, and the Court of Appeal for the Northwest Territories. It is a list of the rules made under the:

  • Judicature Act, R.S.N.W.T. 1988,c.J-1
  • Territorial Court Act, R.S.N.W.T. 1988,c.T-2
  • Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46, and
  • Northwest Territories Act, R.S.C. 1985,c.N-27
