The Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption concluded at The Hague on May 29, 1993, sets out a framework for co-operation between member States to ensure that international adoptions are carried out in the best interests of the child and to prevent the trafficking in, abduction of, or sale of children.
Canada became a signatory to the Convention on April 12, 1994. It is in force in British Columbia as of April 1, 1997.
As per section 57 of the Adoption Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 5, a copy of the Convention and the date on which the Convention comes into force in British Columbia has been published in the BC Gazette, Part II, (1997) vol. 40, p. 103.
