Lord's Day Act
Last revised May 23, 2024

The Lord's Day Act, R.S.C. 1970, c.L-13, prohibited commercial activity on Sundays.

In the 1985 case about Sunday shopping, R. v. Big M Drug Mart, the Supreme Court of Canada found the Act to be of no force and effect as it infringed on the guarantee of freedom of religion and conscience in s.2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The text of the Act was therefore not included in the Revised Statutes of Canada, 1985.

The Table of Acts Not Consolidated in R.S.C. 1985 lists the Lord's Day Act as unconstitutional.
