Unclaimed Bank Balances
Last revised September 06, 2022

Balances of amounts more than $100 which have been unclaimed for nine years or more are reported annually by banks, trust companies and loan companies.

Annual lists were formerly published around mid-June in a supplement to the Canada Gazette, Part I.  As of April 20, 2007, publication in the Gazette is no longer required and the practice of publishing a supplement has been discontinued.  See sections 104 and 381 of An Act to Amend the Law Governing Financial Institutions and to Provide for Related and Consequential Matters, S.C. 2007, c. 6, for repeal of publication requirement.

Unclaimed balances where the owners cannot be contacted after ten years of account inactivity are transferred to the Bank of Canada.  To search for unclaimed balances, visit the Bank of Canada website.
